Author, playwright, screenwriter and film director Holly Charles-Pearson finds extraordinary stories in the ordinary experiences of people of color. In 2018, Charles-Pearson founded the nonprofit theater company Houston Play On Purpose, writing, producing and directing stage productions focusing on social justice and the needs of the underserved.
While the self-proclaimed literary activist always finds a way to incorporate research, history and activism throughout her work, she also embeds sarcasm, wit and humor. This style can be witnessed in her NAACP Image Award nominated masterpiece, the alternate history short If They Took Us Back and her latest short Tying Knots, a sharp pivot toward traditional sitcom humor.
