In the alternate history short film If They Took Us Back, the U.S. government mandated the return of all formerly enslaved people back to Africa in 1863. More than a century later, a descendant of the ‘Black Returns’ (DANIEL) decides to break the 160-year exile and return to the U.S. in exchange for overdue reparations from a remorseful, sympathetic and Black-obsessed America.

Author, playwright, screenwriter and film director Holly Charles-Pearson is a self-proclaimed literary activist who not only incorporates research, history and social justice throughout her work, but also sarcasm, wit and humor. This style can be witnessed in the author’s spellbinding first novel ‘Velvet’, multiple stageplays addressing everything from the impact of gentrification to the school-to-prison pipeline and her most recent film project, the alternate history short ‘If They Took Us Back’. Charles-Pearson’s provocative think-pieces have earned her a TEDx Talk and an NAACP Image Award nomination
