“I Was the Weirdo” uses the story of pioneering rapper Priest Da Nomad to illuminate the obscure hip-hop and arts subculture, incubated along Washington D.C.’s historic U Street corridor, famously known as “Black Broadway”; under the city’s backdrop of politics, crime, black prominence, and its own brand of music known as Go-Go.
Director
Larry Ware II

Larry Ware II, also known as Priest Da Nomad, is a trailblazer of Washington D.C.’s independent Hip Hop scene and a key figure in the cultural revival of the historic U Street corridor, known as “Black Broadway.” Priest’s legacy is mainly as an artist, getting his start under the tutelage of rapper Bizmarkie, and with an arts organization known as the Freestyle Union, which also placed him into the world of Hip Hop Theatre along with the late great Chadwick Boseman. Expanding his artistry, he has directed the majority of his music videos, blending visuals with powerful narratives. His feature documentary, ‘I Was the Weirdo’ , chronicles his 30-year journey and spotlights the untold story of D.C.’s vibrant but often overlooked Hip Hop and arts subculture, in a backdrop of politics, crime, black prominence, and D.C.'s own brand of live music known as Go-Go.
